2008 May - Projects

Construction Projects And Other Programs

This year's construction projects included the roof leak at the hatchery office and infrastructure for the hatchery security system. We were able to get a handle on the hatchery roof leak with the help and advice of Master Journeyman Eric Bolin from Knox Roofing. Eric met me at the hatchery and spent several hours analyzing the problem, offering suggestions, and making temporary repairs.

I am happy to report the temporary repairs will work as long as we can keep debris from accumulating on the roof. The infrastructure for the hatchery security system was a labor intensive effort lasting several days. Thanks to a gang of dedicated volunteers, we were able to bury hundreds of feet of conduit and several Christy boxes. We are ready to pull wire and purchase cameras and equipment based on our needs and budget.

We expect our efforts will deter vandalism and maintain hatchery security. I had the opportunity to work at the hatchery during spawning season. It was interesting and informative to work closely with Dave Streig and our newest hatchery team member Carla Moss.

Carla will assume Dave’s responsibilities after his retirement in 2009. I was able to participate in all aspects of the Coho and Steelhead projects, including fertilizing eggs, incubation, hatching fry, and my favorite, release of surviving breeding stock back into their native environment. Speaking of releasing, our small tank transport truck is due for retirement to lesser duties. We need a dedicated one ton truck with suspension that is capable of carrying our partners in fish culturing back to their respective waters. If anyone is aware of any opportunities please contact Al, Larry or myself.
