STEP Update(Salmon and Trout Education Program)

Here we go again in STEP! We had a one-day STEP workshop in mid-April. It was held at the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose. The thirteen attendees were a mix of new teachers and teachers wanting a refresher with the new curriculum. There were many nice comments from attendees regarding the workshop. Because we did not have enough teachers register, we canceled our regular two-day training at the National Marine Fisheries Lab in Santa Cruz with many regrets and made the switch to a one-day workshop at the Children's Discovery Museum.

Now, we're getting ready for the extensive egg- distribution/fry incubation program. We have received over 100 signed egg applications from classes this year…slightly less than last year. It's expected (as Mother Nature decrees) that the steelhead eggs will be ready for distribution in April. Look to the stars as we meet this challenge! Still, we're not sure what's to happen with our STEP program next year. Regulators still insist that we switch to using rainbow trout rather than steelhead.
