2008 May - STEP Egg Distribution

STEP Egg Distribution (Salmon and Trout Education Program)
By H. Miller

We did it! One day, last week, and another day the week before, our STEP team bagged and delivered eyed Steelhead eggs to a total of 98 classes. Considering the logistics, the geographical location of classes (across six counties in total), and the timing all in two days, it was a major challenge. But, we did it!

There were a total of 20 STEP volunteers helping with this program, considering the two days. To some of the volunteers, it meant getting to the Restoration Hatchery at 7 AM to start the bagging work. To others, it meant meeting at the Hatchery near 8 AM or at a designated meeting area, later, along the extensive route in order to receive their allocated bags of eggs along with the approved Fish and Game permit and instruction letter.

After each delivery-person received the eggs and paper-work, they traveled off to the preassigned classes for their respective classroom delivery. The real fun part was in delivering the eggs to each class and witnessing the excitement and appreciation of the STEP students when they (the students) received their eggs.

Many thanks go to the following STEP team members for all their efforts with this challenging, yet rewarding, project:
