2008 May - STEP Egg Distribution

STEP Egg Distribution (Salmon and Trout Education Program)
By H. Miller

We did it! One day, last week, and another day the week before, our STEP team bagged and delivered eyed Steelhead eggs to a total of 98 classes. Considering the logistics, the geographical location of classes (across six counties in total), and the timing all in two days, it was a major challenge. But, we did it!

2007 May - Step Update

STEP Update(Salmon and Trout Education Program)
By H. Miller and B. Fitch

Here we go again in STEP! We had a one-day STEP workshop in mid-April. It was held at the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose. The thirteen attendees were a mix of new teachers and teachers wanting a refresher with the new curriculum. There were many nice comments from attendees regarding the workshop. Because we did not have enough teachers register, we canceled our regular two-day training at the National Marine Fisheries Lab in Santa Cruz with many regrets and made the switch to a one-day workshop at the Children's Discovery Museum.

Now, we're getting ready for the extensive egg- distribution/fry incubation program. We have received over 100 signed egg applications from classes this year…slightly less than last year. It's expected (as Mother Nature decrees) that the steelhead eggs will be ready for distribution in April. Look to the stars as we meet this challenge! Still, we're not sure what's to happen with our STEP program next year. Regulators still insist that we switch to using rainbow trout rather than steelhead.

2007 May - Step Training

STEPping into the New “ A Day of Training " with the STEP Crew
By Josephine Mendez

What does the Discovery Museum, painting, playing games, and water tests have to do with conservation? That's just what we discovered at a recent Saturday STEP training. The Discovery Museum in San Jose was the perfect location for our STEP class. The 16 or so educators that attended were ready for discovery, stimulation and learning; and the class didn't fall short! One of the greatest tools we received from the STEP crew is this fabulous new binder of lessons. Truly, it is impressive.

2007 May - STEP and 1st Grade

STEP & 1st Grade
By Penny Brennan, Teacher

I teach first grade and GATE students at a Title 1 school in San Jose. The STEP program has enabled me to really get through to my students that they are the custodians of their planet. STEP encourages students to develop a sense of personal responsibility. My first grade students are keenly aware that the Steelhead Trout eggs need a special environment in order to survive.

2006 November - STEP

Hello "STEP-Folk."

We sure appreciated receiving some nice letters and photos from our STEP Classes this year…following their Spring Class Incubation and Release Activities. Did you know that we distributed Steelhead Trout Eggs to 108 Classes during this school-year? It sure was a busy time, but well-worthwhile! We expect to do another Workshop Training again, this year at the National Marine Fisheries Lab in Santa Cruz. Details will be determined and given, probably by November of this year.
