General Rules
- The Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project (MBS & TP) Salmon Derby shall also be referred to in these rules as the BIG FISH Derby or the Derby.
- Derby registration tickets (ticket) must be purchased in advance of fishing.
- All contestants must have an official registration ticket. Purchase of a Raffle Ticket constitutes a donation to MBS & TP, a nonprofit organization.
- Any individual may enter the Derby by purchasing a ticket and agreeing to abide by all Derby rules.
- Only one fish per ticket, per day, per specie may be entered in the Derby.
- Only BIG FISH Derby Officials (Officials) shall exercise the right to question the eligibility of any participant, to inspect fish submitted and to determine the validity of any registration ticket.
- Contestants may be disqualified by the BIG FISH Derby Officials for violation of any of the Derby rules or for any other reasons deemed by the officials to be sufficient for disqualification. Decisions by the officials shall be final.
- All Derby tickets are non-transferable and will not be replaced.
- No Director of the MBS & TP is eligible to win the Grand Raffle Prize.
Fishing Rules
- Contestants fishing on a Charter boat must identify themselves as a Derby participant to the charter crew before fishing.
- Any person in a private boat may participate in the derby by purchasing a ticket.
- Contestants must abide by all fishing regulations of the Department of Fish & Game. Contestants must abide by all CDF&G sport fishing regulations in effect during July 2007.
- Only salmon, halibut, rock cod, ling cod or sea bass may be submitted in the Derby. The fish must be a legal sport fish taken on a Derby Day to qualify and the contestant must have in possession a valid California sport-fishing license. Only hook & line may be used. No Spear fishing will be allowed as a method of taking fish for 2007. All fish are to be submitted whole. Please do not clean fish before weigh-in for the 2007 Big Fish Derby.
- Derby salmon, halibut, rock cod, ling cod or sea bass will be weighed to the nearest ounce on Derby scales.
- Contestants must present salmon, halibut, rock cod, ling cod, or sea bass to one of the Official Derby weigh-in stations between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM on the Derby Day the fish was caught. NO EXCEPTIONS!
- A Derby Official shall inspect all salmon, halibut or rock cod, sea bass or ling cod entered in the derby. If it is the judgment of the Official that the game fish has post rigor, or if any other violation has occurred, the contestant and all other persons in the same private boat shall be disqualified.
- Any fish with a hole punched in the tail fin prior to weigh-in shall not be eligible for any subsequent Derby weigh-in.
- Any contestant entering a salmon, halibut, rock cod, sea bass, or ling cod in the derby must sign a weight certification indication that the fish was caught by that person and submitted in compliance with derby rules.
- A contestant may submit a heavier salmon, halibut, rock cod, sea bass or ling cod to replace a previous entry on that day (with a separate ticket). The previous entry of the same species will then be replaced for the grand prize and the 3 Day Grand Weight Total. Only one fish per day per species may be entered for the 3 Day Grand Weight Total prize.
- Derby contestants may fish from boats, wharfs, piers, or shore in the Monterey Bay area where fishing is legally permitted.
- Any commercial fisherman may enter the derby if they fish from their boat with sport fishing equipment and follow sport fishing regulations on the day they are fishing in the derby. Commercial fishermen are required to show their log book to a derby official to confirm their intent on sport fishing on any day a fish is entered in the derby. The log must be completed before entering any fish. The derby official at that location will make the final determination on the eligibility of any fish entered.
