VOLUNTEERS ACTIVITIES CORNER

By Allen Smith, Board Vice-Chairman & Volunteer Coordinator

I want to thank the great volunteers who helped us on reconstruction work parties this summer under the expert guidance and direction of our super volunteer, Steering Committee, Chairman Bob Eustice. On two work party weekends, we were able to complete almost all of the tasks that had to be done before the rains begin. Great job volunteers!

Late this summer we were able to help the DFG in a two-day fish rescue mission, which involved capturing fish from a small lake off of Rancho San Carlos Road, south of Carmel Valley. We then transported the fish to the Salinas area and planted them in a large pond at the Natividad Boys Ranch run by the Monterey County Sheriff's Department. The DFG and Monterey County sheriff's personnel were very appreciative of our help.

The volunteer fish care training program went fairly well this year. I trained 15 people, but by now about 1/3 of these trainees have decided not to continue to participate in our fish care activities. Unfortunately this type of dropout occurs each year to a greater or lesser extent. I will be looking for new volunteers to train for fish care activities starting in March of 2000. Anyone interested in being trained and working with us in fish care activities, please contact me, Al Smith, at 831-831-458-3095 or send a note to my attention at P.O. Box 417, Davenport, CA 95017. Old pond returned to natural habitat with the help of volunteers from the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project

This year we have scheduled our annual steelhead fin clipping party for Saturday, December 4, 1999. We will begin fin clipping at about 9:30 am at the Kingfisher Flat Hatchery, off of Swanton Road, a few miles north of Davenport. We will be serving lunch to the fin-clipping volunteers, and we will supply the necessary fin clipping equipment. Since it can rain in early December, I recommend bringing some type of rain gear and foot wear that can get wet without causing a problem. Even if the weather is sunny, I still recommend water-repellent clothing since water can get splashed on you. If you decide that you can come to our fin clipping and social event, please call us in advance and let us know how many people will be coming with you so we can plan on having enough food for everyone! If you don't know where our Hatchery is located, please call us at 831-831-458-3095 for directions. We hope to see you there!

22nd Annual Albacore Dinner and Raffle

By Mary Jane Rogers

Saturday, November 13th, 1999 is the date for the 22nd Annual Albacore Dinner and Raffle. No host cocktails will be available from 6-7 PM; dinner will be served at 7 PM, with the raffle following. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Larry Smith, Al Smith, and Granville Perkins clean fish for last year's albocore dinner.

We hope you can join us for this wonderful fundraising dinner prepared by the Castroville Rotary Club. The Castroville Rotary Club has been sponsoring this event for 22 years. We owe them a great big THANK YOU!

Check out the silent raffle for some great early Christmas gifts. We have received a very nice donation of fishing equipment from Penn Tackle Company for this year's raffle. So check out our "Tuna Tackle Tables."

We still need volunteers to clean fish on Saturday morning. We also need additional door prizes. If you can help, please contact Mary Jane Rogers at (831) 455-2981 (afternoons) or (831) 763-0926 (evenings).

See you at the Dinner!
