MAMMOTH MONTEREY BAY SALMON DERBY By Larry Wolf Lots of limits and big fish greeted the anglers of the 5th Annual Mammoth Monterey Bay Salmon Derby. The three-day fishing tournament and raffle had over 400 entries. For next year, some changes are in order. This is due to some complaints as to how the derby is closed each day. We have been reluctant in the past, to close the weigh-in stations at an exact time if there are people waiting to weigh-in fish. In addition, while people were waiting to weigh-in fish, additional people showed up at the close, and were allowed to weigh-in their fish. To try and accommodate all the people who are weighing-in fish at the close, and to be fair to all of those who weighed-in fish before the appointed closure time, we will come up with a better system that will allow people in line at the closure, the opportunity to weigh-in their fish. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Our weigh stations are run by volunteers and we do the best we can. We thank all of you for your patience and welcome suggestions on how to improve our derby. |
By Dave Streig On August 24th & 26th, 1999, MBS&TP members Al Smith, Bob Eustice, and Dave Streig assisted the DFG Fisheries Management Supervisor, Pat Coulston, and biologist Jennifer Nelson, along with a large crew from the Monterey County Sheriffs Department, in rescuing fish from the Rancho San Carlos Development project above Carmel Valley. We provided the MBS&TP truck and fish-hauling tank to transport non-native fish that were being removed from Rancho San Carlos Lake. Bluegill, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and catfish were moved to the Monterey County Sheriff's Children's Camp lakes for the camp's fishing programs. A total of 740 pounds of fish, ranging in size from 1 1/2-inch fry up to 10 pound fish were moved. In the first load, there was a large mouth bass that would not fit through the 6-inch discharge pipe. Bob Eusitice had to dive into the tank and work it out of the discharge inlet and hand release it to the lake. Approximately 2000 fish of various sizes were rescued and moved to their new home. Native trout and some western pond turtles were also rescued and moved upstream of the lake. The lake has been pumped dry to clean out the non-native fish and restore it to native steelhead habitat and spawning area. |
